About Northstar

A sober living home rooted in stability, support, and hope.

A structured sober living home in West Des Moines, built around the simple idea that recovery happens best in a real home — with clear expectations, supportive people, and the daily routines that hold a life together.

Why Northstar exists.

Northstar began with a simple observation: the stretch between finishing a treatment program — or any decision to start fresh — and walking back into the same environment that contributed to the cycle is where too many people fell short. A real home with structure, support, and the steady company of people walking the same road can change that. Northstar was opened to be that kind of home in West Des Moines — a steady place for adults ready to keep doing the work.

The home isn't a clinical setting and doesn't pretend to be. It's a sober living home where residents live together, take part in recovery programming, and hold each other to a shared standard. Structure where it helps. Warmth where it matters. A steady environment to keep building from — for as long as a resident needs the home to be one.

A bright, open-concept living and kitchen space with warm wood floors, mid-century chairs, and gold pendant lighting.

Our mission.

We exist to give adults in recovery a home where the next chapter can take shape — built on four things that hold the day together.

  • Stability

  • Accountability

  • Community

  • Purpose

What guides the way we live.

  1. 01

    Safety

A drug-free home and the daily routines that hold the line.

  2. 02

    Structure

Clear expectations agreed on day one, not negotiated in the moment.

  3. 03

    Honesty

Open conversation about where you are — with the team and with yourself.

  4. 04

    Accountability

Daily check-ins and shared responsibility for the home.

  5. 05

    Respect

For every resident, every guest, every conversation.

  6. 06

    Faith-rooted encouragement

The founders' faith shapes the tone of care. The home is open to all.

  7. 07

    Community

Daily life alongside people walking the same road.

Faith-rooted support, open to all.

Northstar was founded by people whose own lives have been shaped by faith, and that shows up in the encouragement and care residents receive. The home is open to everyone regardless of belief. No one is required to share or participate in any religious practice as a condition of living here — what we ask is that every resident commit to the recovery work the home is built around.

A real home with real expectations.

A few things shape what daily life at Northstar actually looks like:
